Below are just a few activities to do in the Lake George Area during the month of December.

Skiing and Snowboarding

Home to three premier ski resorts – ranging from beginner trails to some of the steepest runs in the eastern part of the U.S. – the Lake George Area is proud to welcome all skiers and snowboarders to enjoy pure winter fun.

Whether you’re scaling the widely renowned summits at Gore Mountain, exploring the 35 varying trails of West Mountain, or searching for a vintage experience at Hickory Ski Center, the area is a winter athlete’s paradise.

(Fun Fact: Both Gore and West can run with artificial snow.)

From the lighted trails of Cole’s Woods, to the vertical climbs of The Pinnacle, this is a fantastic opportunity to experience the beauty of an Adirondack winter, while also getting some terrific exercise. Holiday Lights

Some of the most glorious sights for visitors during December happen at night. When the sun goes down, and the shimmering glow of holiday lights and displays illuminates the streets.

Besides taking some scenic drives around the blocks and neighborhoods that make up the area (a fantastic idea in and of itself), there are many holiday-themed events that provide the means to “light up the night.”

Witness the Parade of Lights at Lite Up the Village in Lake George, observe the ceremonial Memory Tree Lighting in Chestertown, stare in awe at the community displays during Lights on Johnsburg, or search for other events nearby to bask in one of the most beautiful times of the year.

Holiday Shopping

If gift-finding is still on your list of to-do’s, there’s no need to worry! Not when the Lake George Area provides plentiful chances to get the perfect present for everyone on your list.

The Factory Outlets of Lake George are home to more than 50 stores, with major discounts on national brands and designer merchandise all year long. However, if you prefer to support small local businesses, there’s plenty of high-quality homemade goods to shop for all around the various towns and villages. Several great examples are mentioned in our blog, “Local Holiday Shopping in the Lake George Area.”

Many of the holiday festivals around also feature vendor and artisan fairs, with local creators displaying and selling their craft(s). From gorgeous centerpieces at the North Country Festival of Trees, to cozy apparel at the Adirondack Holiday Festival, to craft beverages at Christmas in Warrensburgh. “Shop ‘til you drop” is made possible in the Lake George Area.

Igloo Dining

For a true unique experience, dining with friends and family in a heated igloo is in a league of its own. Be seated in a warm and cozy dome, savor delicious food, and take in picturesque settings with a snow or winter-themed landscape as your canvas.

Partake in Igloo Dining from some of the area’s most popular restaurants, such as The Barrel, the Bolton Landing Brewing Company, Park 26 at the Queensbury Hotel, and more.

This seasonal specialty is highly regarded in the area, so trying for yourselves is certainly recommended.

Sleigh Rides

Enjoy an authentic horse-drawn sleigh ride as you dash through the snowy fields of the Adirondack forests at Circle B Ranch.

A team of Belgian Draft horses pushes either a smaller classic sleigh (4-7 people) or a larger group sleigh (up to 12 people) around the backwoods of Chestertown as guests are able to marvel at the majestic and relaxing scenery. After the ride is done, complimentary refreshments and a “make your own” smores bar are served at the ranch’s barn, perfect for warming up on a chilly day.

This experience is great for the whole family, and one that will leave lasting memories.

*Reservations are required. Call (518)-494-4888 to book your ride or for more information.

What to Pack

Before participating in any of the above events or activities, it’s important to make sure you’ve adequately prepared for whatever weather and/or environment you can expect to encounter.

Below are some helpful suggestions for packing for your Lake George Area trip during the month of December.

Dress Warm

There’s no way to put this. The typical December weather is cold (especially if you’re out and about during the early morning or late-night hours). As such, an essential part of packing should be to make sure you dress warm for the chilliest of temperatures.

Besides wearing additional layers, you should also consider:

  • Scarves
  • Mittens and/or Gloves
  • Jackets
  • Long Pants
  • Long Sleeves
  • Sweaters
  • Proper Winter Boots

Be Aware of the Surrounding Conditions

For the winter athletes and recreationists out there, a good rule of thumb is to make sure you prepare for any terrain or condition you may encounter.

If you’re planning on hitting the slopes, make sure you pack goggles, hats, helmets, and any other gear you may think of in addition to your skis and snowboards. For longer treks, food and water are also highly encouraged.

However, some items may not be part of your initial thoughts. For those planning to hit any hiking or snowshoeing trails, you want to make sure to bring crampons (or hiking spikes) as well as trekking poles to navigate through the ice-layered ground.

Snowshoes or skis are also a must in order to prevent what is referred to as ‘postholing’ along the snow-packed trails. Postholing is described as “the vertical plunge of one’s leg into deep snow, leaving behind a large hole.”* This not only ruins trails for others, but also creates deep and dangerous holes in the snow that can potentially trap or injure others. Make sure to keep the paths safe for everyone to use throughout the season.
