Silent Solitude: Lake George Island Camping

By Eric Pfau on May 06, 2019

Camping on a Lake George island is an escape to pure, silent solitude. It's a central pillar of the Original Vacation, when adventurous travelers spent warm days fishing creeks and hiking trails and slept clear nights underneath the shimmering stars. Today, campers in the Lake George Area can sleep under those same stars on the primitive islands that elegantly cover Lake George. While island camping introduces modern visitors to some of the raw aspects of the Original Vacation, island campsites are clean and close to civilization. Those searching for a tame wilderness experience not far from home should spend their summer vacation on and island campsite.

Lake George Island Camping

An escape to an island campsite is full of smiles and sunshine. Every single day offers hours of outdoor fun both in Lake George and on land. Campers should begin every camping trip with a full exploration of the island. Find places to swim, perfect fishing spots, and plenty of downed, dead wood for the evening's campfire.

After scouting the campsite, it's time to cool off in the lake. Swim around the shoreline, do cannonballs off the wooden dock, and search for keepsakes with a snorkeling mask. Once the sun starts to set, it's time to dry off and get that campfire roaring!

The outdoor fun doesn't end once the sun goes down! There's an entire exciting world to discover in the darkness of an island campsite. Build a strong, blazing fire to roast marshmallows, cook hot dogs, and keep the evening chill away. Sit back in a comfortable camp chair with your family and stare straight up at the Milky Way, revealing more stars than you ever knew existed. Finally, after a s'more or two and plenty of laughter, retreat to your tent to rest up for another day.

Campers often wake up to the familiar smell of frying bacon as the sun rises over the Adirondack Mountains. Before following the wafting scent to breakfast, feed the sun fish and rock bass with a few casual casts into the glass-flat water. After reeling and releasing a flopping fish or two, head back to camp and rekindle last night's fire. There may be the remainder of a stunning sunrise to gaze at, or only the last paper plate of bacon and eggs to devour. No matter, another day of island camping is just beginning. Time to get back into that bathing suit.
