Black Mountain Range

This New York State DEC-maintained trail overlooks Lake George from the east side. The highest mountain on the shores of Lake George has a summit elevation of 2646 feet. Easy climbing most of the way with an occasional rocky pitch. Choose an up and back trail or loop trail to Black Mountain Pond and Lapland Pond before heading back to the trail head. Another option is access from the lake with a DEC day-use permit so you can dock your boat and hike up. Several lean-tos on various trails. On your ascent listen closely for the sound of a windmill. A fire tower still stands but is not accessible to climbers. Just below the summit there is a sign where a ranger’s cabin once stood. Up and back route is 5 miles. Round trip loop 6.7 miles. Moderate difficulty.

Entrance point off Rt 22.  Outstanding views in all directions.
