With another Adirondack winter fast approaching, it’s time to get excited for skiing and shredding in the Lake George Area. After a warm and largely snowless winter last year, we’re predicting an avalanche of snow this season. The area ski centers are cleaning up trails and blowing snow like crazy, so here are four great reasons to ski and ride the Lake George Area.
1 - Gore Mountain is a First-Rate Ski Center
Gore Mountain, a four peak ski center in North Creek, is the king of Lake George Area skiing. With 115 unique and varied trails to explore, 14 modern lifts to keep you on the snow, and the amenities to make sure you stay warm and comfortable, Gore Mountain is the finest ski destination in New York State. Gore has it all, including more vertical than most of the ski mountains in Vermont, more trails than any other ski resort in the state, and plenty of blue squares and black diamonds. Want a long, open glade run? Take the Adirondack Express triple chair and head for the Twister Glades. Craving some quiet, effortless turns? Ride the North Quad for a couple of hours. Looking to get your adrenaline pumping? Head to the top of Gore Mountain and use the High Peaks Chair to do laps on Lies. Do the kids need lessons? Gore has great learn-to-ski programs for kids of all ages. Is Nordic skiing or snowshoeing more your style? Head over to the nearby North Creek Ski Bowl and check out lighted cross-country trails, now with snow-making capabilities to add to the ground cover that Mother Nature provides. No matter what type of terrain you like to ski or ride, Gore Mountain has the trail for you.
2 - West Mountain is the Ultimate Family Ski Mountain
At the heart of the Original Vacation is family, and West Mountain is a first-rate family ski center. Offering 30 trails of easy to expert terrain, there is no better place to get your family acquainted to skiing or riding. West Mountain has plenty of fun and adventure to offer. Let the kids take runs in the terrain park, or brush up on their fundamentals with West Mountain’s expert instruction program, while you head to the top and enjoy the sun and snow without worry. Don’t let West fool you, this is the ultimate family mountain, professionally groomed with snowmaking to rival all of the big boys. West Mountain provides that hometown ambiance without sacrificing any of the quality of a blue chip mountain.
3 - Awesome Après Ski
What’s a day of skiing or riding without a little après ski when the lifts stop spinning? Add the mountain bars, restaurants, and lodges to the growing list of why the Lake George Area is the place to ski. Gore Mountain’s Tannery Pub & Restaurant is serving up delicious bar favorites, such as cheesy fries and Gore-met brisket chili. Back in Queensbury, West Mountain Bar & Eatery is a great place to watch the 4 o’clock game with your family, or pass the time with a sandwich while the kids are at their snowboarding lesson. They offer a full bar and menu, enough TVs to ensure that you’ve got a view of the game, and floor to ceiling windows to remind you that you’re in the mountains.
4 - Way More Than Skiing
With skiing like this, you can’t go for just one day. Make a ski weekend of it, because there’s plenty to do in North Creek, Queensbury, and Warrensburg to keep the whole family entertained. In the mood for some live music? Check out barVino in North Creek and their eclectic menu of locally produced foods and hard to find craft beers. Izzy's Market & Deli is famous for its homemade bagels, so be sure to stop in for breakfast before heading to the hill. After a day at West Mountain, drive over to nearby Glens Falls and enjoy a pint or a soda at Cooper’s Cave Ale Company. If you finish dinner early enough, you might be able to catch the Adirondack Thunder in some East Coast Hockey League action at the Glens Fall Civic Center!
When you add the growing list of Adirondack restaurants and amenities to the already excellent beginner trails, steep downhill runs, and powder filled glades of the region’s ski centers, it’s easy to see why the Lake George Area is the mecca of New York skiing. The days are getting shorter and winter is on our doorstep, so why not plan your weekend away?
