The Lake George Area in New York’s Adirondacks
Unveils Scenic Routes Off the Beaten Path
WARREN COUNTY, N.Y. (Aug. 23, 2007) – The Lake George Area in New York’s Adirondacks has just unveiled new scenic routes that take visitors by pavement, hard-packed dirt and water off the main corridors through the paths less traveled to experience all that the area has to offer.
The locations of some of the areas hidden scenic and natural treasures can be found in Warren County’s 2007 Autumn brochure, which outlines events, activities, scenic drives and water tours for the fall season in the Adirondacks.
“New for this year we’ve outlined several specific routes visitors can take to help them experience all the wonders of the Adirondacks,” said Kate Johnson, director of Warren County Tourism. “Our area is home to some of the most spectacular autumn views anywhere and we just handed out the ‘treasure map’ to natural beauty in golds, reds and oranges.”
While the changing colors of the trees in the southern Adirondacks are reason enough to visit during autumn, they are just the beginning. The Lake George Area offers a wide range of activities and attractions throughout the autumn months.
The region, which boasts spectacular leaf-peeping and is an ideal romantic getaway destination for couples looking to rekindle old memories, also features events such as a costumed reenactment of a battle from the French and Indian War, the World’s Largest Garage Sale and the magnificent view of 90 hot air balloons lifting into the sky at once. While the specific routes outlined in the brochure allow visitors the most exhilarating trips through the area, the listed events and activities offer memorable destinations.
Sept. 7-9 hot rods, custom cars, trucks, classic cars and muscle cars take over Lake George for the 19th Annual Adirondack Nationals. This unique show offers the traditional display of cars of yesteryear, but also features a cruise as registered show participants take their cars to the street. Portions of Canada Street and Beach Road are converted into a moving showcase on Friday and Saturday evenings for a truly impressive sight. For more information, visit www.adirondacknationals.com.
History buffs will find special opportunities scheduled this fall. I Love New York’s signature event, the 250th Anniversary of the Siege of Fort William Henry, will take place Sept. 14-17. The weekend revolves around a reenactment of the August 1757 siege and capture of Fort William Henry by the army of the Marquis de Montcalm. For more information visit http://fiw250.iloveny.com.
The arts also flourish in the Lake George Area in the fall. The 2007 Lake George Jazz Weekend brings Adela Dalto, Rashied Ali Quintet, Dave Samuels Caribbean Jazz Project, and Bob Devos with Eric Alexander, among others Sept. 15 and 16 at Shepard Park in Lake George Village. The 35th annual Adirondack Balloon Festival returns to Warren County Sept. 20-23. Hundreds of balloons will be launched over Friday night, and Saturday and Sunday morning and evening. Entertainment, food and family fun will take place on the ground while vividly colored balloons dance in the skies above. For more information, go to www.adirondackballoonfest.org.
September wraps up with one of the area’s annual premier events, the World’s Largest Garage Sale, Sept. 29-30 in Warrensburg. Treasures abound as over 1,000 venders flock to the town, which also features an entire community of garage sales, food, entertainment and more. For details visit www.warrensburgchamber.com.
Pugs descend on the area in October for the annual Halloween Pug Party & Parade, Oct. 21 at Dynamite Hill Recreation Area in Chestertown. Over 160 pugs and their families are expected to attend to show off their good looks and costumes. Prizes include most creative, scariest, cutest, best duo, youngest, oldest, best wrinkles, most handsome and many more.
The Adirondacks are also known for their spectacular views of changing foliage. Prime leaf peeping is typically the first two weeks of October, but peak foliage varies based on altitude and weather. While scenic drives are the typical way to view the brilliant colors, hot air balloon flights, boat cruises, river rafting and bicycle routes offer a unique perspective and sights of a lifetime.
