'ICE OUT' ON LAKE GEORGE
Sure sign of spring in Adirondacks
LAKE GEORGE, NY – In Upstate New York, “ice out” on Lake George is as much as a sign of spring as a robin, crocus or daffodil.
The thaw that marks the start of a new season of tourism and activities in The Lake George Area, "ice out" occurred on Sunday, April 22 around mid-afternoon. Typically it happens about the third week in April, bringing anglers, whitewater enthusiasts and campers to the region looking for an early start to summer fun.
"Ice out marks the official change in seasons when people trade in their skis for rafts, kayaks and fishing poles. And now that the ice is gone from Lake George, anglers can get back in their boats to find the hidden sweet spots," said Kate Johnson, director of the Warren County Tourism Department.
Ice out also signals the start of some of the Northeast’s best fishing for landlocked salmon on 32-mile-long Lake George when the fish can be caught close to shore, particularly near smelt spawning streams. It is also prime season for lake trout, which are also found near spawning streams from mid-April through June. Both fish can be readily found in the lake’s north and south basins.
