- Whitewater Adventuring
- As the mountains shed their snow and water is released from local dams, class I-V rapids provide excellent conditions for whitewater rafting, canoeing and kayaking. Since the rapids are at their peak in the spring, it’s the perfect time for groups of friends, families, co-workers or individuals to take a thrilling journey down the Hudson, the Schroon or the Sacandaga — three of New York’s best rivers for any whitewater adventure.
- Early Season Camping
- Spring creates the perfect opportunity for the most dedicated campers to really rough it in the Adirondack wilderness. Before the tourists of the summer season arrive, pitch a tent at a secluded wooded site to get a taste of camping as Mother Nature intended. Or, if you’re more amenity-oriented, opt for a tent or RV site at one of the many campgrounds that provide the convenience of hook-ups and facilities.
- Fishing
- With over 20 lakes and countless ponds and streams, anglers will have no problem finding a special spot to fish the day away. The region’s best-kept secret is the Warren County Fish Hatchery, which keeps the local brooks, ponds, lakes and rivers stocked with rainbow and brook trout. There are dozens of outfitters in the area that provide an authentic Adirondack fishing adventure with a licensed fishing guide who might even be persuaded to show you the sweet spots that only the locals know about. Trout Season Opening Day is April 1st of each year.
- Discover your natural instincts
- Be the first of the season to walk one of the area’s seven nature trails. Bring your binoculars to Thirteenth Lake and observe birds and other wildlife in their natural habitats. Try rock hounding at Siamese Ponds Wilderness Region. Sign up for one of several fascinating, hands-on nature and wildlife programs at Up Yonda Farm Educational Center. In late spring, explore caves, grottos and other natural geological wonders at Natural Stone Bridge and Caves and tour the garnet mines where New York State’s Gemstone is found. No matter what your interest, your appetite for nature is sure to be satisfied.
- Be a spectator
- The region is jumping with all kinds of cultural entertainment — Broadway musicals and plays, dance and vocal performances, film and theater festivals, orchestras and dinner theaters, and comedy shows.
- Museums
- With an area so rich in history, you could spend an entire weekend just visiting the captivating museums of the area! In Glens Falls alone, view an impressive array of famous European and American art at the Hyde Collection, get a glimpse of city life in the 19th century at the Chapman Museum, and explore interactive displays and hands-on exhibits at the World Awareness Children’s Museum. Other “must-sees” are the Marcella Sembrich Opera Museum — the former summer home and teaching studio of the famous opera diva, and the Fort William Henry Museum, which offers live reenactments and is steeped in history from the French and Indian War era.
- Maple Sugaring
