AUTUMN IN THE LAKE GEORGE AREA OF THE ADIRONDACKS

WARREN COUNTY, NY—Autumn is the perfect time to escape to the Lake George Area in the Adirondacks. When the air turns crisp and cool, the winding back roads, mountain peaks, lakes and rivers of the Southern Adirondacks put on a wonderful display of color. As summer vacationers head home, the streets, restaurants and shops become less crowded, making fall the ideal time to vacation in Warren County.

Leaf peeping is on any fall vacationers to do list. “Peepers” will marvel at the rich colors and scenic country views as they drive through charming villages and along lake and river shores. Get a bird’s eye view of the changing foliage by taking a gondola ride at Gore Mountain in North Creek. For those who would rather stay on the ground, 2-hour scenic train rides along the Hudson River are a perfect way to take-in the surrounding beauty of the region.

Save on gas by making your way down one of Warren County’s scenic waterways. Ride world class rapids on the Hudson River Gorge, made possible by dam releases from local Indian Lake. Or, take the Sacandaga River for a more family oriented rafting or tubing adventure. Paddle your way along crystal clear, Lake George and gaze at the crimson colored hues of the oak trees along the shoreline of 32-mile long Lake George. For flat water kayaking and canoeing, the Lower Hudson River or Feeder Canal are ideal locations to relax and enjoy the tranquility of fall in the Southern Adirondacks.

What better way to see the fall foliage than to enjoy area nature trails. Meander along the Hudson River via the Warren County Nature Trail or visit the Pack Demonstration Forest where you can take a self-guided tour and learn the history behind the Grandmother Tree, a huge white pine tree with a fascinating past. Take a self-guided tour of the Warrensburg Fish Hatchery or catch breathtaking views of Lake George atop Prospect Mountain.

Backpackers looking for more strenuous hikes will marvel at the colors in the pristine Adirondack wilderness along trails for Crane Mountain, the Black Mountain Range, Pharaoh Lake Wilderness Region and the Siamese Pond Wilderness Region.

Get a true taste of the season in the Southern Adirondacks by visiting a local farmers’ market. Throughout the fall months, farmers’ markets can be found in most villages and towns. As local and regional farmers in the Adirondacks celebrate the harvest season, fresh vegetables, handcrafted pies and seasonal products are for sale in open air markets, making your experience like one out of a picture page in a history book.

History comes alive before your eyes at the Fort William Henry Museum in Lake George. Watch as guides dressed in 18th-Century costumes re-enact scenes from the French and Indian War. Take a self-guided walking tour through historic Glens Falls, and discover the rich history of the area. Pick up a self-guided walking tour map and start your tour at The Chapman Historical Museum or at The Hyde Collection.
